Fianna Fáil TD for Galway East Michael Kitt has welcomed the allocation of €1 million to be divided across all local authorities to support them in marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Deputy Kitt made the comments after the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys TD confirmed the funding allocation to him in the Dáíl.

Deputy Kitt commented, “I welcome the comments made by Minister Heather Humphreys in the Dáil where she confirmed to me that €1 million will be made available to the local authorities across the state to assist them in preparing to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. This means that approximately €30,000 will be made available to each of the councils in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

“I have been pushing the government to do more to ensure that all councils across the state are adequately prepared to mark the 1916 centenary. While I welcome the allocation of €30,000 to each council, it remains the case that much more needs to be done to ensure that people will have the opportunity to mark the centenary at a local level. Each of the councils must now move to draw down the funding and put it to good use as quickly as possible.

“Fianna Fáil is currently putting in place a comprehensive programme of public events to mark the 1916 centenary. The events we are organizing will take place at both a local and national level and will mark one of the greatest turning points in Irish history. The events will be coordinated by the Fianna Fáil organisation locally and we will be encouraging the public to participate at every opportunity.”
