Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has repeated his call on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to facilitate a head to head debate ahead of the upcoming General Election. His call comes following forty eight hours of dishonest political attacks from the Taoiseach and his party on Fianna Fáil and a series of interviews in which Mr Kenny failed to answer questions clearly or spell out any clear vision for the future of public services in Ireland.
Deputy Martin commented, “Since the opening of the Fine Gael Ard Fheis on Friday evening, the dominant theme from Mr Kenny and his colleagues has been a string of dishonest attacks on the Fianna Fáil party. It is absolutely clear that FG’s private polling has confirmed what we know to be the case – that Fianna Fáil is the only credible alternative to the current Government.
“Rather than engage on the issues and be honest in explaining their plans for the future of public services as they attempt to introduce ‘US Style’ taxes, Fine Gael instead seem to believe that just attacking Fianna Fáil is a credible alternative to having an actual vision for the country.
“During the two hours of televised debate at City West, virtually every speaker spent their time attacking my party and I. By contrast, a total of five minutes of those same two hours were dedicated to discussing the health service which is in a state of genuine crisis.
“On a night when 1,600 of our children were in temporary accommodation because they have no home to go to, the Taoiseach repeatedly referred to Fianna Fáil but could not find five seconds to talk about the issue of homelessness.
“If Enda Kenny wants to dedicate his campaign to attacking Fianna Fáil that is his choice, but if there is any honesty in his position, he should at least agree to meet me directly in head to head debate so that voters can make a well informed decision about who is being honest about the future and who has a credible plan for a fairer recovery.”
