Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher has welcomed the inquiry announced by the Minister for Health Dr. James Reilly following the failure for successful transport to be provided for 14 year old Maedhbh McGivern for a liver transplant in London.
“I hope the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) co-ordinated inquiry will be thorough and swift. This is a very serious and extremely distressing incident for the Maedhbh and the McGivern family. The discrepancies in some of the accounts relating to the events of Saturday evening further compound this situation.”
“I am urging the Minister to ensure that HIQA engages the appropriate officials in the Departments of Defence and Transport in light of the involvement of the Air Corps and Coastguard. It is imperative that the breakdown which occurred here is explained in detail and processes are put in place to ensure it cannot happen again. We must know if this was a matter of resources or a communications failure on night itself.”
“I welcome the Minister’s clear statement that what happened here is unacceptable and I trust the Minister will be in a position to inform the Dáil of the inquiry’s findings in the very near future.”
“I want to offer my deepest sympathies at this difficult and traumatic time to Maedhbh and the McGivern family.”
