Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher TD has expressed his shock upon hearing of allegations of horrific abuse at the Rostrevor House Nursing Home in Dublin.

“I want to join with Minister Kathleen Lynch in expressing my deep shock upon hearing the reports of abuse at Rostrevor House today.  The allegations are truly horrific and must be investigated fully,” said Deputy Kelleher.

“I want to assure the Minister and her colleagues in Government that they have my full support for the investigations currently underway into activities at the home.”

Deputy Kelleher said: “Regardless of our political views we can all agree that abuse, as alleged to have happened here, can never be tolerated.  I think it will be particularly distressing for people to hear these reports today in the case of the care of older people.”

“I think the action that has been taken on the part of HIQA has been right and appropriate and has been taken in the context of the need to protect the health and wellbeing of residents.”

Deputy Kelleher concluded: “As a result of this or any other investigation, if it is determined that more powers or scope is needed by HIQA then the Government should move as a matter of urgency to amend legislation or provide whatever resources are required, and we will support any such measures.”
