Fianna Fáil Communications Spokesperson, Timmy Dooley has said the expected loss of 750 jobs at Eir raises very worrying questions about the new management’s commitment to Irish customers.
“This is a dark day for the 750 employees and their families and my thoughts go out to them. Eir need to provide reassurance about the redundancy package available for those affected.
“The shedding of almost a quarter of the company’s workforce comes just two months after Eir decided to pull out from the tender process for the National Broadband Plan.
“Late last year, a consortium comprised of NJJ Telecom Europe and French telecommunications company Iliad, bought Eir in a reported €3.5 billion deal.
“These two decisions, to withdraw from the NBP tender process and today’s job loss announcement, raises very serious questions about the new owners’ commitment to Ireland and their customers in Ireland.
“We need to hear from the company about its future plans for the Irish market and their customers here. Minister Naughten must also start looking at the wider communications industry in Ireland to ensure that there is adequate competition,” concluded Dooley.
