Fianna Fáil believes in a strong, well-resourced and well managed An Garda Síochána. We are committed to strengthening the Garda force to 14,000 members and maintaining Garda numbers at this optimal level.
We believe that the decision to undermine the link between the Gardai and the communities they serve, made by this Government, was a major mistake and Fianna Fáil will look at ways to mitigate this damage.
We believe that a significant investment programme must be undertaken to update the technology Gardaí currently use to allow for smarter policing in our communities and the proper targeting of resources.
We propose that the neighbourhood watch programme should be revived and expanded.
We commit to establishing a national neighbourhood watch directorate to centrally support and drive community neighbourhood watch programmes across the county. This will be a central to tackling rural crime and in particular burglaries.
Our current criminal justice system is expensive, outdated and often ineffective. A recent CSO report by the Irish Prison Service & Central Statistics Office in 2013 showed that criminals in Ireland have a reoffending rate of 62.3% within three years. Over 80% of those who re-offended did so within 12 months of release. Our justice system is not working for victims or our communities.
Fianna Fáil believes that Ireland needs to build a criminal justice system which not only acts to deter criminal activity but also allows for restorative justice to the victim and the community in which the crime was committed. We commit to expanding the use of restorative justice in our criminal justice system where appropriate and ensure that community service orders are fit for purpose and monitored effectively.
