Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Environment Barry Cowen has called for an urgent response from Environment Minister Alan Kelly following this afternoon’s exposure of Irish Water’s outrageous bonus scheme and the revelation that top executives at the troubled quango will be eligible for up to 19% bonuses. The revelations came in today’s RTÉ’s This Week programme.
Deputy Cowen commented: “It has become increasingly clear that the Government needs to reign in the bonus driven quango that it has created in Irish Water. The bonus regime that has been revealed today in documents seen by RTÉ’s This Week will leave taxpayers outraged. The Government repeatedly told the Dáil that Irish water would not develop a bonus culture – this development exposes those assurances as cynical and untrue.
“The Government and Minister Alan Kelly need to take a stand on this issue and make it clear that this bonus culture will not be tolerated. Minister Kelly needs to state unequivocally that Irish Water will not be paying bonuses.
“Irish Water is entirely a creation of this government and it is in a mess. The idea that those running the organisation would now be lining themselves up for five figure bonuses is offensive and it must be stopped.”
