Cork South West TD, Margaret Murphy O’Mahony has said that we are failing our local sports stars by not providing the resources needed to allow them excel on the world stage.
Deputy Murphy O’Mahony was commenting after yet more stories emerged of athletes lacking the funding needed to compete at an international level.
“We have heard about rowers, athletes and Paralympians not having the funding to attend competitions and tournaments on an international level.
“Additionally, I am shocked to hear that the bodies managing and running local athletics in West Cork simply do not have the resources to deliver local athletic meets and competitions.
“We have a fundamental choice to make in this country. Do we invest in sport and recreation or do we not?
“If we want to see Irish people, both men and women, excel on the world stage in athletics and in other sports and activities we need to put our money where our mouth is.
“Grassroots sports need to be funded, and international success will follow. We have talent in abundance in Cork, but unless we do what’s needed to help them excel, we will still lag behind other comparable countries,” concluded Murphy O’Mahony.
