Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach says it is important to recognise the enormous role Gardai play in promoting peace in border communities. Deputy Breathnach made the comments as the state marked the United Nation’s International Day of Peace.
“International Peace Day is an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the role that members of An Garda Síochána play in promoting safety and peace in our community. Gardai have faced enormous challenges in border counties down through the decades, and continue to face provocation from a small minority of people who wish to see a return to violence.
“It’s particularly important that we commemorate Garda Sergeant Patrick Morrissey, Garda Adrian Donohoe and Garda Tony Golden as we mark International Peace Day. They each paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving their state. They were murdered in the line of duty while seeking to protect our local communities in Louth.
“Today we can proudly mark International Peace Day in border counties, but we should never forget the immense damage caused by decades of conflict. International Peace Day is an opportunity to redouble our efforts towards achieving continued cross-border reconciliation.”
