Fianna Fáil TD for Carlow – Kilkenny Bobby Aylward is delighted to announce that he has today been informed by An Post that the postal service in Inistioge is to be retained.

Deputy Aylward extensively supported the campaign to retain the post office after it was revealed that An Post was considering its permanent closure.

“I was delighted to receive word from An Post today that this vital service will be retained. The news will come as a huge boost for the people of Inistioge who must be commended for being so active on this issue. This is an example of the power that a community can have when they come together to fight a common cause” said Deputy Aylward.

“The town endured much distress due to the recent announcement by An Post that they were considering the permanent closure of the post office, so the retaining of this service represents a victory for the Inistioge and for rural Ireland.

“I am very thankful to the Board and Executive of An Post for giving such careful consideration to the submissions made by both myself and the people of Inistioge pleading for this service to be retained. It is extremely important that residents, especially older people that rely on Inistioge Post Office to pay bills and collect social welfare payments, won’t have to travel outside of the town to avail of services which will boost the local economy.

“An Post have informed me that the position of the new Postmaster will go to tender next week and that they hope to have a new Postmaster in place within a number of weeks.

“The people of Inistioge can now breathe a sigh of relief as their most trusted financial provider, which also acts as an important social outlet in a rural setting, will continue to provide this crucial service to the community.”
