Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan TD has said that the alleged human smuggling operation at Dublin Airport must be thoroughly investigated.
The Deputy made his comments following reports that Gardaí made three arrests last night in relation to a suspected illegal immigrant smuggling network which may have been operating at the airport for some time.
“I commend the work of the Garda National Immigration Bureau and all involved in last night’s operation at Dublin Airport. I now urge the Department to allocate all necessary resources to the Gardaí in order to determine the facts relating to this on-going investigation. It is essential that allegations of corrupt payments made by illegal immigrants are thoroughly investigated so that the persons making and receiving such payments can be brought to justice.
“As details emerge, focus needs to be placed on securing and strengthening our border controls. Our immigration controls must be continually monitored and any suspected breaches of the Illegal Immigrants Trafficking Act and the Immigration Act must be examined and fully investigated.
“We need to send a clear message that those assisting the illegal smuggling of individuals into Ireland will be exposed by the authorities,” concluded Deputy O’Callaghan.
