Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon/Galway Eugene Murphy has said hundreds of young people in the region will lose out on the provision of youth clubs over the summer months following an issue whereby Youth Work Ireland lost the contract to provide youth services in the Roscommon/Galway area and he has raised the matter in the Dáil today with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Speaking in the Dáil today under Questions on Promised Legislation Deputy Murphy pointed out that Youth Work Ireland was awarded the tender to provide targeted youth work in counties Roscommon and Galway and they had established many clubs throughout County Roscommon and East Galway with great success.

“I understand that up to 800 young people availed of these services in areas such as Roscommon Town, Castlerea, Ballygar, Dysart, Frenchpark and Ballaghaderreen- it was very inclusive with young people from all kinds of backgrounds, as well as referrals from CAMHS and young refugees at the Ballaghaderreen EROC Centre and it had a very positive affect.

“In March 2019, the tender was up for re-application and Youth Work Ireland lost the contract and there will be  a loss of these services over the summer months- the young people will really miss these services and they held a protest at the GREBT meeting in Athenry yesterday,” said Deputy Murphy.
