Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs and Enterprise Dara Calleary has welcomed the intervention of the Labour Relations Commission in the ESB dispute, as the threat of strike action looms ahead of Christmas.
Speaking during Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil today, Deputy Calleary called on the Government push harder for a resolution to avoid the threat of black outs and severe disruption to consumers, businesses and vital services during the busy Christmas period.
“It is a relief that this issue is finally being treated seriously by the Government. It has been clear for some time now that the threat of strike action was not going to just go away on its own. The uncertainty alone has caused considerable distress to businesses and service operators in particular. I welcome the fact that Minister Rabbitte has now recognised the need for decisive intervention before it is too late,” said Deputy Calleary.
The LRC’s intervention poses a real opportunity for a breakthrough in a bitter dispute that has the potential to bring vital services to a halt in the lead up to Christmas. I am appealing to both sides to enter discussions with an open mind and a willingness to bring an end to this dispute once and for all,” said Deputy Calleary
