Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on European Affairs Timmy Dooley TD has expressed his shock and sadness following the Paris terrorist attack.
Deputy Dooley says the latest attack brings into sharp focus the need to resolve growing conflict in the Middle East.
“The terrorist attack that took place in Paris is deeply shocking and is a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by extremist groups. I send my deepest sympathies to the victims of the attack, their families and the wider French people,” said Deputy Dooley.
“The threat posed by extremist groups is growing right across Europe. There is an urgent need for European states to work together to disrupt the activities of extremists who are intent on causing mayhem on our streets.
“The international community also needs to work together to end the growing conflict in the Middle East. Extremist groups such as ISIS have found refuge amongst the chaos of war in countries such as Syria and Iraq. The conflict in the Middle East has driven entire communities into desperation, and extremist groups are taking advantage of this. We need to recommit ourselves towards achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East.”
“It’s important that tragic events such as this are not hijacked by individuals on the extreme right who themselves are focused on creating division in our communities.”
