Fianna Fáil Finance spokesperson Michel McGrath has warmly welcomed the announcement of a major expansion by Apple at its European headquarters in Cork which will result in the provision of 1,000 new jobs.
Deputy McGrath commented, “This is tremendous news for Cork and is a tribute to the dedication of the management and staff of Apple in Cork and the support they receive from IDA Ireland and other state agencies. I have no doubt they had to fight off stiff competition from other potential locations in order to secure this major investment.
“It is the latest instalment in a long and successful partnership between Ireland and Apple that is based on a combination of excellent staff and local management, high quality infrastructure and a supportive tax regime for foreign direct investment.
“Apple has had a major facility in Hollyhill in Cork since 1980, just three years after the company was formally incorporated in the US. The manufacturing business was transformed in the early 2000s into a major integrated operations centre with nearly 5,000 staff in Cork supplying services to Apple subsidiaries across the globe, as well as distributing and selling Apple products.
“Apple is a huge contributor to the local and national economy. This success should embolden the State to strenuously defend our relationship with Apple and other major multi-national firms from the envying eyes of other European countries who would like to prise away jobs from Ireland.”
