Fianna Fáil Senator Thomas Byrne has said any plan to change the development status of Stamullen must be backed up with adequate services for the area.
The Meath East Dáil candidate says he has received information from Meath County Council which shows that the local authority is considering changing the development status of Stamullen from “Small Town” to “Moderate and Sustainable Growth Town”.
Senator Byrne commented, “The proposal to change the development status of Stamullen would see the population of the village increase from 3,130 (Census 2011) to somewhere in the range of 5,000 – 15,000. This is a significant proposal which will have a massive impact on the local community.
“It’s important that any future development in the village be backed up with adequate services for the local community. Funding will need to be allocated to develop the sewage system, water infrastructure, footpaths and lighting in the area. People do not want a return to the past where developments were constructed without the necessary support services being put in place in advance.
“Meath County Council will be putting the proposal out to public consultation at the end of November. Residents will be allowed to make their views known during this process and local councillors will decide whether or not to adopt the proposal. The proposal might not actually be implemented until 2022, and will only take place subject to the long awaited link road to the motorway from Cockhill being constructed.
“I will be monitoring this proposal over the coming months with the view to keeping the public informed of any further developments.”
