Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Dublin, John Lahart TD has said that those engaging in the on-going preparations for illegal bonfires in the lead up to Halloween must be reminded of the danger and destruction that they pose for communities across Dublin.
The Dublin South West TD said, “For most, Halloween is a fun and exciting time of the year but sadly, others are intent on causing mayhem in their area.
“Last year’s Halloween celebrations descended into much mischief and it is essential that adequate numbers of Gardaí are deployed to ensure that it is a night that the whole community can enjoy safely.
“Chief Superintendent Peter Duff, who is also the Co-Ordinating Garda Officer for the Dublin Region on Bonfire Night, has previously confirmed to me that Garda numbers would be close to trebled to patrol on the night.
“Each year, emergency services including Dublin Fire Brigade receive thousands of phone calls related to anti-social behaviour, bonfires and injuries caused by improper use of illegal fireworks during Halloween.
“These are services that are already significantly overstretched trying to protect Dubliners; it would be reckless for anyone to knowingly contribute to their work by hosting a bonfire or purchasing illegal fireworks for use.
He added, “These illegal bonfires are often held in close proximity to properties in densely populated areas of the city and leave homeowners and the elderly frightened for their safety.
“There is an onus on us all in the lead up to Halloween to be vigilant of, and report any stockpiling of bonfire material to authorities in order to avoid the risk of injury and damage to the environment.
Deputy Lahart concluded, “The four local authorities in Dublin have worked hard to organise a range of family friendly events that I hope will be well attended. This year we all need to be safe and responsible so that everyone has an enjoyable Halloween night.”
