Transport Minister has to plan for Clonburris SDZ in Budget 18 – Curran

Published on: 18 October 2017

Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Mid-West, John Curran has said that the lack of forward planning in transport to deal to the 8,000 new homes to be built as part of Clonburris SDZ is foolish and leaves existing residents with an even weaker transport infrastructure.

Deputy Curran commented, “I’ve previously said that the development of internal infrastructure and community facilities within Clonburris is very much welcomed. I hope it goes a long way in making an impact on the present housing crisis.

“I am concerned that the already stretched transport services will be further crippled once construction begins.

“Clonburris SDZ has every capacity to succeed as a new community but it must be integrated into the surrounding communities of Clondalkin and Lucan by means of public transport links, external road links that service the entire area as a whole.

“The fact that no focus was provided in Budget 2018 to fund increased transport infrastructure in the area means that Clonburris looks very likely to become an isolated new community.

“There are significant gaps in existing services; Dublin Bus routes are currently insufficient to deal with the proposed population at Clonburris, while traffic congestion remains a real issue for many.

“If this Transport Minister had any foresight on the plans needed to deal with the 8,000 new homes, his Department would have fought for funding in this Budget to deliver on Luas and Metro West.

Curran concluded, “This Budget dramatically failed the people of Dublin Mid-West who are concerned that there are no plans to extend external transport links to absorb some of the pressure on transport services that will arise once the population increases.
