Dublin City Councillor and General Election candidate, Paul McAuliffe has said that it is up to local Fine Gael TD Noel Rock to explain the decision made by An Post to close the local post office in Finglas East
An Post has taken the decision to close the Post Office on Glasnevin Avenue once the current postmistress retires next month. It is known that a contract will not be renewed to appoint a new employee to operate the post office.
Commenting on the matter, Cllr McAuliffe said, “It is widely understood that post office closures are one of the major plights affecting rural Ireland but the problems facing urban communities following closures has not received enough attention.
“The winding down of the Post Office network is a direct consequence of the Government’s failure to bring forward a strategy in the area. It’s hypocritical of a local Fine Gael TD to claim to be rigorously campaigning to save the post office but at the same time refusing to use the direct influence he has as a member of the Government benches to put pressure on the minister.
Cllr McAuliffe added, “Deputy Rock can wring his hands all he wants but this is a decision backed by his party.
“I have met with officials from An Post and outlined in very clear terms that we will not accept this short sighted decision. Following the meeting I circulated an information leaflet that I hope will encourage everyone living in the locality to fight against this closure.
“We cannot stand by and do nothing when there are credible options, which could be considered, to ensure that An Post’s services are retained.
He concluded, “Our local community will not stand for this closure and I will be fighting tooth and nail to ensure that it does not go ahead.”
