Fianna Fáil Cllr and Mayor of Bandon, Gillian Coughlan, has expressed her delight at the announcement that work is to begin on a Walking and Cycling Strategy for Bandon.
Consultants at Cork County Council have been appointed to draw up proposals for the venture.
Cllr Coughlan commented: “I am pleased to confirm that, having pressed the transport department in Cork County Council, consultants have been appointed to prepare a Walking and Cycling Strategy for Bandon. I wish to acknowledge the help and co-operation of Peter O’ Donoghue in County Hall in this regard.
“It is envisaged that this strategy will put forward measures to ensure a reduction in short-distance car journeys through the availability of good quality information and alternative infrastructure; the provision of safer routes for people to travel by bike or on foot; improved walking and cycling access to public transport; community involvement and tie-ins with schools/colleges and workplace plans through existing programmes and new linkages.
“I also expect that the consultants will seek submissions from the public and I would urge the people of Bandon and beyond to participate fully in the process.
“As Mayor of Bandon, I am particularly enthused about this development. It is high time for the infrastructure in Bandon to be addressed and plans made to adapt it to a new environmental and economic reality.”
