Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice Dara Calleary TD has paid tribute to Garda Ciaran Jones, who died tragically while attempting to protect others during severe flooding in Co Wicklow last night.
Deputy Calleary said: “Garda Jones was off duty when he risked his own safety to prevent others from getting into danger during the extraordinary conditions last night. This is the mark of an extremely brave and dedicated young man whose loss will be deeply felt in the community and within An Garda Síochána.
“I wish to express my deepest sympathies to Garda Jones’ family, friends and colleagues at this tragic time. The thoughts and prayers of so many people are with the Jones family and I hope they can take some comfort in the knowledge that their son and brother gave his life to protect others. It is at times like this that we are reminded of the bravery of our gardaí, on and off duty, in trying to save others in all circumstances.
“My thoughts are also with the communities in Stepaside where Garda Jones was stationed and his own community in Co Wicklow, and with the members of the gardaí who served closely with the young Garda. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
