Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Defence Jack Chambers is taking part in today’s Respect and Loyalty Parade in Galway City to show the Party’s solidarity with serving and past members of the Defence Forces and their families.
This is the third such parade in less than 12 months and it aims to highlight the unsatisfactory pay, and service conditions, pertaining to personnel of the Defence Forces.
Deputy Chambers explained, “Defence Force members are unable to participate in any kind of protests or work stoppages. It is left to their families and to veterans to stand up and have their voices heard and that is why I am here today with Party colleagues to express our support.
“At the last Respect and Loyalty Parade which took place in Cork a few short months ago, I listened to families outline the hardships they were facing. What was abundantly clear was that these people feel completely abandoned by the Government.
“Since the publication of the Public Sector Pay Commission report this feeling has been matched only by frustration and upset. 96 cent per day before tax on their military service allowance is nowhere near sufficient enough to attract recruits, stem the flow of those leaving nor is it enough to raise morale.
“The resolve of the people participating today is incredible. They will continue to fight for better pay and conditions for the brave men and women who serve in our Defence Forces. Parades such as these will continue for as long as the Government ignores their concerns”, concluded Deputy Chambers.
