Taoiseach stays silent as bank files turn up in his office

Published on: 30 August 2012

The Taoiseach must explain why he misled the Dáil and the public about the existence of files relating to the bank guarantee.

Enda Kenny twice told the Dáil that he had no such files and they have ‘gone missing’ or must have been ‘shredded’.

A Freedom of Information request from Fianna Fáil has revealed that 17 files relating to the bank guarantee are sitting in the Taoiseach’s office.

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin said, “It is no surprise the Taoiseach’s claim about the files going missing or there being n files in the first place were false and without foundation.  He misled the Dáil and the Irish people. It was a petty political charge beneath the office of the Taoiseach.

“The global banking crisis and the effect it has had in this country is an issue of enormous significance. The entire issue deserves better than the glib political soundbytes and false claims that we have seen from the Taoiseach and his Government.”
