Rabbitte’s “great leap forward” too short on specifics – Moynihan

Published on: 30 August 2012

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Communications, Michael Moynihan TD, says Minister Pat Rabbitte’s new plan for broadband is lacking real substance and fails to breach the digital divide.

Deputy Moynihan commented: “The announcement by Minister Rabbitte is high on rhetoric and low on specifics. How is this plan proposed to ensure that there is universal coverage at high speeds? The broadband penetration rate in large tracts of rural areas is less than 20%, we need to specifics on how the Government will address this.

“It is important for the Minister to set a national minimum broadband speed, but there is no delivery date just some vague comment about it being completed in the lifetime of this Government.

“What additional steps is the Minister taking in order to address customer concerns and ensure that business and other customers have a resilient and high quality broadband service?

“We support a target of 70-100Mbps for at least 50 per cent of the population is but we need to hear concrete details on how this is to be achieved.”
