Longford-Westmeath TD Robert Troy has congratulated Mullingar Boxer John Joe Nevin on his bantamweight semi-final win in London this afternoon, setting up the possibility of a second Olympic gold medal for Ireland.
Deputy Troy said: “There was a huge turnout and a great atmosphere in Mullingar this afternoon as hundreds of people were in town to watch John Joe’s fight. I was delighted to be with the crowd in the Market Square cheering him on today. John Joe is a credit to his family, his community and to boxing.
“There will be an anxious wait for his final fight tomorrow night against Britain’s Luke Campbell. I want to wish John Joe all the best for tomorrow but no matter what happens he has secured himself a place in sporting history with his Olympic medal win.
“The standard of Irish amateur boxing is extraordinary and you can see from the performances at the Olympics that John Joe Nevin and Ireland’s boxing team will inspire a new generation of boxers across the country.”
