Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Justice, Niall Collins TD, has called on the Taoiseach to publish a letter he received from former Justice Minister Alan Shatter in which he claims officials in the Department failed to fully brief him on legal advice surrounding allegations made by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.
He commented: “Reports in today’s papers that former Minister Alan Shatter has written a letter to the Taoiseach claiming officials in the Department “stymied” him from taking proper legal advice in relation to allegations of Garda misconduct made by Sergeant Maurice McCabe are deeply worrying. These are potentially very serious allegations and the Taoiseach needs to publish this letter and outline what steps he is taking to address the concerns made by the former Minister for Justice.
“This cannot turn into another long drawn out controversy. Doubts about the operation of the Department of Justice have to be immediately addressed.
“I am also calling on Minister Frances Fitzgerald to publish the report she commissioned into the operation of her Department. It is in the public interest that this is done immediately.”
