Fianna Fail Spokesperson for the Irish Overseas and Diaspora, Senator Mark Daly, has welcomed the appointment of fellow Kerryman Jimmy Deenihan as Minister of State for the Irish Abroad.
Senator Daly produced the first ever policy by any political party on this issue which included the need to appoint a Minister for the Irish Overseas and Diaspora.
He commented: “Minister Deenihan’s appointment shows the Government has belatedly recognised the importance of the 70 million people of Irish Heritage scattered throughout the world and the challenges they face.
“In the United States the issue of Immigration Reform must now be a priority for Minister Deenihan. The 50,000 undocumented Irish in the United States need a voice and deserve recognition, the first item must be the fast-tracking of working visas to the United States for the Irish diaspora. Another priority must be the forgotten Irish community in Britain, many live alone in destitute conditions, I hope the new Minister will provide more resources so enhanced community services can be provided for these people.
“I have previously worked with the Minister on the All Party Working Group on Commemorations and look forward to working with him in his new role. I wish him the very best of luck in his new portfolio.”
