Increase in the number of children in adult psychiatric units unforgivable – Browne

Published on: 20 June 2019

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Mental Health James Browne TD has said that the increase in the number of children being treated in adult psychiatric units is an affront to the “Vision for Change” Mental Health strategy.

Deputy Browne was commenting following confirmation from the Chair of the Mental Health Commission that there has been an increase in the number of children in adult psychiatric units over the last year.

John Farrelly also reported sub-standard conditions at some mental health units across the country.

Deputy Browne commented, “Some of the findings in recent Mental Health Commission reports were incredibly disturbing. They detailed instances of children sharing bathrooms with adult patients in one acute psychiatric unit, while 20 patients were forced to share one bath and one shower in another facility.

“Far from bringing an end to the practice of having children in adult units, which Fine Gael has committed to, there has actually been an increase in incidents. This is shocking.

“A Vision for Change recommends a minimum of 108 CAMHS inpatient beds. Currently only 72 available, but fewer than 50 of these are available on a regular basis.

The beds are there but they are not being utilised. This is a disgrace and the Minister has serious questions to answer”, concluded Deputy Browne.
