Home help freeze lets down clients & families – Murphy

Published on: 11 June 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway, Eugene Murphy, has said the restriction on new applicants for home help services will only have a knock-on negative consequence for families, carers, and the wider health services across Roscommon and in Galway.

Deputy Murphy commented, “It is disgraceful that there are such restrictions on home help services. We all know the benefits of living in your own home for as long as possible. Despite this the government appear blind to the benefits and have not made any effort to reduce the 6,000 plus waiting list.

“I understand, despite extreme circumstances, no new applications will be considered until next November. What is most concerning is the families and clients already in receipt of home help hours who will not receive additional hours if their condition worsens. As people age there is a high probability that their needs increase. For the HSE not to issue additional hours to people who need them is reckless.

“The recent freeze on hours has to be reconsidered and the government must show respect to the clients and families who depend on home supports,” concluded Deputy Murphy.
