Fianna Fáil Senator Thomas Byrne in Meath Thomas Byrne has expressed shock and concern following a proposal to increase by 50% the Public Service Obligation levy on Electricity Bills.
The levy subsidises energy companies which generate electricity from renewable resources.
Senator Byrne commented: “This 50% jump will add almost €30 a year to the average household bill and comes at a time when energy prices in Ireland are among the highest in Europe.
“The Commission for Energy Regulation has asked for comments from the public on the proposed increase in the PSO. I have written to the CER to demand that they stop this price increase that they control.
“I am also encouraging all consumers to email the CER to demand that they do not proceed with this rise. Comments on this Proposed Decision should be sent to John Lynch, at the Commission for Energy Regulation, at

“What is worrying is that the CER attributes part of the increase to subsidies for an increasing amount of wind energy. If this is allowed to continue, bills will increase into the future for consumers to subsidise multinationals,” concluded Senator Byrne.
