O’Brien condemns cynical and partisan activity on Banking Inquiry in Seanad today

Published on: 05 June 2014

Fianna Fáil Seanad Group Leader Senator Darragh O’Brien has said: “Senator Marc Mac Sharry was nominated and ratified by the Seanad Committee on Selection to be one of the Senators to serve on the Banking Inquiry last evening. This was done in accordance with appropriate Standing Orders. Today he was faced with an underhand smear campaign by Fine Gael Leader Senator Maurice Cummins.

“I am glad that the allegation made against Senator Mac Sharry has been withdrawn by the Leader of the Seanad, after having been asked to by the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.

“What we witnessed today was totally and utterly uncalled for and unacceptable behaviour. The legislation covering the Banking Inquiry covers in depth how the Committee on Procedure and Privilege may consider any accusation of bias on any member’s part. I have also called on Senator Cummins to apologise to Senator Mac Sharry for the unwarranted accusation made today.”
