Minister must engage meaningfully to secure Wexford Rehab services – Browne

Published on: 10 May 2019

Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne says the Health Minister must engage fully with Rehab management to ensure that services in Wexford and across the country can remain viable.

Parents with children attending RehabCare in Clonard recently received letters saying services are under threat due to the financial difficulties being experienced by the group.

This week it was announced that both sides will meet to try and find a resolution to the crisis.

Deputy Browne said, “The RehabCare group provides essential services to thousands of vulnerable people across this country. Here in Wexford, 35 people with physical and intellectual disabilities benefit from the services provided by staff at the Clonard centre.

“The work which is undertaken by RehabCare gives clients greater independence and confidence and vastly improves their quality of life. Any threat to these services must be avoided at all costs.

“This financial situation has been flagged with Minister Harris months ago, and requests from management for a meeting had been snubbed up until last week. While I welcome the fact that the Minister has now chosen to engage with RehabCare, it is extremely important that he does so in a meaningful way.

“Every effort needs to be made to resolve this issue and avoid disruption to essential health services for people in Wexford and across the country”, concluded Deputy Browne.
