Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon has welcomed the decision by Sligo County Council to grant planning permission to upgrade the existing Water Treatment Plant at Lough Talt in County Sligo.
The permission comes after progress was forced through by Deputy Scanlon who had raised this with Ministers for Housing, Planning, and Local Government and Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht as the project was stalled between both Departments due to IROPI legislation.
Deputy Scanlon said “Today’s decision by the local authority is very welcome. I have repeatedly raised this in the Dáil as a decision was needed by both Ministers Murphy and Madigan. Finally, they moved the matter on and Sligo County Council had it under their remit once again to grant permission.
“Residents in the area have been subject to boil water notices for months now. Due to traces of cryptosporidium, the water has been unfit for human consumption.
“Today’s notice is very welcome to the residents who have not had the provision of safe drinking water. I will work with the council and Irish Water to ensure there are no more delays and the upgrade is delivered as soon as possible,” concluded Deputy Scanlon.
