Cllr Mary Fitzpatrick today called for The GPO to be designated as a National Monument.
Speaking on the day of the annual Fianna Fáil Easter Rising 1916 Commemoration at Arbour Hill Cllr Fitzpatrick said: “The GPO is an iconic building and a symbol of the Easter Rising 1916. While An Post has secured planning permission for a 1916 Rising Exhibition and Visitor Centre for the GPO it does not go far enough to protect this icon of Irish history.”
Cllr Fitzpatrick continued “I have worked tirelessly as part of the Moore Street Advisory Committee. While there is still work to be done we have achieved National Monument status for the 14-17 Moore Street with plans for a Museum and Commemorative Centre for this site.
“Today I call for the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan TD and the Government to begin the process of designating the GPO as a National Monument. The status should be in place for the centenary of the 1916 Rising.”
