Ireland North West MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has expressed his sadness on learning this morning of the death of the former Councillor and Dáil Deputy Harry Blaney.
Pat the Cope stated today “Harry Blaney was a highly respected politician who served his electoral area and County with great distinction and commitment during his 45 years as a public representative.”
“I had the pleasure of working closely with Harry during my time as a Councillor. Harry was a member of Donegal County Council from 1957 to 1999 and a member of Dáil Éireann from 1997 to 2002. He was chairman of Donegal County Council on two occasions from 1967 to 1968 and 1986 to 1987.”
“Harry Blaney always believed in sharing power and he played an important role in establishing an arrangement for the lifetime of the Council with the whips of the other parties thus ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the Council.”
“Harry was recognised as one of the great political campaigners during local, general, bye-election and European elections. Harry was known as a tough but fair opponent. He was decent man where his word was his bond.”
Pat the Cope concluded by stating “Harry will be sadly missed by all his political friends and colleagues and in particular by his loving wife Margaret and family.”
