Calleary welcomes deployment of Defence Forces team to Syria

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Defence Dara Calleary has welcomed plans to deploy a team of Irish soldiers to join a United Nations observer mission in Syria.

“This is something that I have been calling for for some time,” said Deputy Calleary. “Syria is in desperate need of an international peace mission and the Irish Defence Forces has the capacity and the expertise to provide much-needed support at this critical time, as the death-toll rises daily.

“Ireland has a strong record of high-level involvement in critical UN peacekeeping missions and has particular good will in the Middle East.  It is only right that our highly-skilled army personnel play a role in the UN’s mission to help alleviate the crisis in Syria.

“I urge the Defence Minister Alan Shatter to keep the Dáil and the public up to date on any developments arising from Ireland’s involvement in this mission and to make a full statement in the Dáil ahead of the deployment of Irish soldiers to Syria,” said Deputy Calleary.
