Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Public Expenditure Thomas Byrne has expressed dismay at the fact that Troika officials will not be answering any questions from opposition or media representatives during their visit this week and questioned the Government’s role in the new arrangements.
Senator Byrne commented, “It is a retrograde step that the Government and the Troika have chosen to do their business behind closed doors on this occasion. It also very disappointing that there are no plans for a press conference to allow Troika officials be questioned about Ireland’s progress and the current progress of the bail out programme.
“It is crucial that there is proper openness and transparency in relation to this process. Fianna Fáil established the principle of broad political engagement with the Troika last year. These meetings have proved extremely useful to cut through Government spin and provide clarity on the terms set down by the Troika. The Troika officials have also acknowledged and welcomed our constructive input.
“Hiding Troika officials and keeping all business behind closed doors will do nothing to encourage public confidence in this process. I am appealing to the Finance Minister Michael Noonan to change Government’s approach and facilitate proper political and media engagement with the Troika while they are here,” concluded Senator Byrne.
