Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Brendan Smith TD, has welcomed the announcement that former President Mary Robinson has been appointed as UN Special Envoy to the Great Lakes region in central Africa.

Deputy Smith commented: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Mary Robinson on her new appointment with the UN. The Great Lakes region of Africa is particularly troubled at the moment but I know Mary will bring a wealth of experience, commitment and know-how to her role as a special peace envoy.

“Ireland has a long history of participation in peace keeping and conflict resolution in Africa and across the globe and I know Mary will continue that good work in a region that desperately needs stability and peace.”
