Fianna Fáil Leader, Micheál Martin TD has expressed his sympathy on the death of Dr John O’Connell.
Deputy Martin commented: “It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Dr John O’Connell today. I served with John in the Dáil during my early career and he was an innovative and effective politician.
“John had a big influence on establishing the Patient’s Charter and was a strong advocate for patient rights. He was also very involved in medical journalism and helped found the Irish Medical Times. John was one of the most radical TDs of his time and always an independent thinker.
“I wish to extend my sympathies to John’s family and friends at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
