Howlin’s ‘pride’ hard to stomach – Troy
Fianna Fáil TD for Longford-Westmeath Robert Troy says Brendan Howlin’s assertion that he’s “proud of the role Labour played in turning things around” shows how out of touch he is with reality.
Deputy Troy explained, “Brendan Howlin needs a reality check. He talks about Labour turning the country around at a time when 1600 children are emergency accommodation and we are experiencing one of the worst crises in our health system. How can he be proud of presiding over a situation where children are being brought up in hotel rooms and older people are lying on trolleys for hours on end?
“Labour TDs are in denial about their policies over the past five years. They promised to protect the vulnerable but did the exact opposite. They allowed Fine Gael prioritise the wealthiest at the expense of everyone else.
“The working and middle classes are trapped in a cost of living crisis. People are struggling to pay rent, while the Government stands idly by and refuses to increase rent supplement. Here in Westmeath there has been a 70% increase in the social housing waiting list since 2013.
“Brendan Howlin should visit Longford-Westmeath if he thinks Labour has turned things around. Longford had just 2 IDA site visits in 2015 and not a single visit in the three years before that. In contrast, there were 205 site visits in 2014, making up almost 60% of all visits in the country.
“Communities in Longford and Westmeath have been badly let down by Fine Gael and Labour. Homes and businesses, which were promised high speed broadband are still waiting. And they will be waiting until 2021 for services to be rolled out under the National Broadband Plan.
“Brendan Howlin’s pride is sorely misplaced. His party’s record in Government is nothing to be proud of”.
