Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and North Roscommon Marc Mac Sharry has called on the government to increase the funding to the home loan scheme. There are reports that the scheme has ran out of funding.
Deputy Mac Sharry commented “There has been a major flaw with the government and their approach to the rebuilding Ireland home loan scheme. Apparently the first to know the funding ran out was the departments press office, yet applications kept coming in. The government have created a situation where young couples and single people applied to the scheme and are left waiting indefinitely.
“Just two weeks ago the Minister referred to the home loan scheme when Fianna Fáil raised concerns but failed to acknowledge any issues, despite now knowing that at least one Local Authority had flagged funding problems. This raises two possibilities – the Minister deliberately withheld important information, or he is just not on top of his brief.
“The Minister needs to quickly clarify when he discovered that the scheme was running out of funding? When he became aware of this, why did he not inform the Dáil or the Housing Committee? He also needs to quickly clarify why Local Authorities were kept in the dark.
“There was talk of a second scheme and funding. The Minister must stop with the PR and deliver additional funding for the home loan scheme,” concluded Deputy Mac Sharry.
