Homeless stats released after we blow whistle on Minister – McAuliffe
Fianna Fáil candidate for Dublin North-West Cllr Paul McAuliffe maintains that Minister Alan Kelly reluctantly approved the release of the latest homeless figures after it was revealed that his department had been withholding them pending cabinet approval
“It is interesting that there had been no sign of these figures until I sent out a press release yesterday pointing out that the monthly figures for January were being with-held.
“The Minister very belatedly released figures for November and December, traditionally there is a spike in homelessness in January and February, which Alan Kelly clearly wanted to conceal during the election.
“The publication of the figures by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) today show that they are as bad if not worse, as feared with a dramatic increase in the number of families now homeless in the city.
“In December there were 41 homeless families, in January 125 families presented as homeless with the reasons varying from eviction from private rental accommodation to overcrowding and breakdown of relationships.
“According to the Simon Community’s Election 2016 report the number of people in emergency accommodation in 2015 increased by 40% when compared to 2014. The number of families increased by 90% and the number of children increased by 84%,” added Cllr McAuliffe.
