Haughey slams Beaumont colonoscopy waiting lists

Fianna Fáil Cllr Sean Haughey has slammed the most recent waiting list figures from Beaumont Hospital which show that the hospital has 2,468 people awaiting colonoscopies. Of that number 95 have been waiting up to 2 years.

“This is disgraceful. This procedure is one of the most important ones in the early detection of cancer, so it is appalling that people are being forced to wait so long.,” he said.
The figures were released by the HSE this week in response to a Parliamentary Question by Fianna Fáil’s spokesperson on Health, Deputy Billy Kelleher. Nationally there are over 16,000 people on colonoscopy waiting lists in 38 hospitals.

According to the HSE response the total number of patients waiting longer than 12 months has fallen, but in Beaumont the figures are simply shocking according to Cllr Haughey:
18-24 months – 97
15-18 months – 119
12-15 months – 108
8-12 months – 678
6-8 months – 472
3-6 months – 535
0-3 months – 461.

“Time is of the essence when it comes to many cancer treatments so making patients wait up to two years for this important procedure puts their health at prolonged and unnecessary risk . It is not good enough in this day and age and it appears the HSE has not learned from past tragedies that occurred because of delays in performing such a straight-forward procedure.”
