Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin TD has called on the Taoiseach to clarify publicly whether the continued and complete failure of the Arts Minister to answer basic questions is as a result of instructions issued by him or his office.
Deputy Martin commented, “As another week in Dáil Éireann concludes, the basic information needed to draw a line under the IMMA / McNulty controversy remains hidden. The minister at centre of the controversy Heather Humphreys continues to refuse to explain her actions in the Dáil or answer questions from the nation’s media.
“The Minister’s current strategy of evasion is either supported by the Taoiseach or directly ordered by him and I would like to know which it is. There is no doubt that Minister Humphreys has the information that the public wants at her fingertips, but her refusal to provide it is leading to increased speculation about how damaging the information is and raising ever louder questions about the Minister’s own future.
“Her comments yesterday, that the issue of a national cultural institution being abused for party purposes was ‘an internal Fine Gael matter’, demonstrates that the Minister still doesn’t appreciate the scale or the nature of the controversy she is in the middle of.
“The Taoiseach has the opportunity today to make clear whether he supports our demand for clear answers from his Arts Minister or whether, in fact, her continued silence is as a result of an instruction from his office.”
