Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher has welcomed the appointment of Sir Sabaratnam Aruklumaran to investigate the death of Savita Halappanavar, but has said the inquiry should be fully independent and not solely under the remit of the HSE.

Deputy Kelleher said, “Sir Sabaratnam clearly has the experience, expertise and integrity to investigate this tragic case of maternal death.  It is disappointing that the Health Minister James Reilly has not asked him to oversee the kind of independent inquiry that will have the full confidence of the public.

“I believe Minister Reilly’s own ambitions for an inquiry that ‘stands up to the scrutiny of the world’ would be best served by an independent investigation.  Savita’s death has deeply affected the public both at home and abroad, and there can be no room for any questions about the impartiality and objectivity of our investigation
