Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Primary Care and TD for Kerry John Brassil has hit out at the government for failing to provide an additional 800,000 home support hours, which has resulted in an increase in the number of people on the waiting list for home care provision.

Deputy Brassil said, “I have been stressing the importance of home care supports for months now but the government has not been listening and now we have a situation whereby the HSE has fallen far behind its targets and there are now over 40 people on the waiting list in Kerry.

“800,000 additional hours were promised in the 2019 HSE service plan but Fine Gael has not delivered. Here in Kerry the figures are 12.8% behind target and we have gone from having nobody on the waiting list for home support hours in February to 43 people at the end of October. Had the government lived up to its commitment we wouldn’t be in this space.

“These figures show that at the end of October the government fell short of its target by some 391,000 hours. If it were to meet its own target an additional 200,000 hours would have to be provided through November and December. That is extremely unlikely.

“It is clear that the million extra home care hours promised by Budget 2020 cannot come soon enough, although given Fine Gael’s record I would have serious questions about its ability and willingness to deliver them”, concluded Deputy Brassil.
