Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Children and Youth Affairs and European Candidate for Midlands-North-West Anne Rabbitte TD has warned that potential increasing childcare costs will see many families unable to meet child care fees, resulting in families relying on relatives or their wider family to care for their children while they maintain full time employment.
Deputy Rabbitte commented, “It was concerning to read the Cost of Doing Business in Ireland Report 2019 this morning which has indicated that as labour costs rise there is a significant risk that childcare costs would also rise.
“In Ireland our net childcare costs are 28% of the national average wage. It is already significantly high. When you consider we pay more than twice the average in the EU, at 12%, families cannot afford further increases.
“I would urge the government to listen to the National Competitiveness Council’s report this morning. Without action for families, soaring childcare costs will leave many families with no alternative but for one parent to stay at home or rely on wider family or grandparents for child minding,” concluded Deputy Rabbitte.
