Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Eamon Scanlon has warned the government not to delay the roll out of GP visit cards to carers.
Legislation to provide carers with GP visit cards passed all stages in the Dáil and Seanad earlier this week.
Deputy Scanlon commented, “I am pleased that this legislation has now been passed and moves can be undertaken to ensure that the application process is opened as soon as is practicably possible. This decision has been a long time coming but is very much deserved. Carers provide around 7 million care hours every week, saving the State approximately €10 billion in unpaid care every year.
“Families in the North West and across the country make huge sacrifices when they become a carer. This legislation goes some way towards recognising those sacrifices and giving them some additional support.
“Now that the Bill has been passed by both Houses, it is important that work begins to ensure that the processes to receive applications are up and running without delay so that the 14,000 carers who will be entitled to a free GP care card can receive it.”
