Cork South Central Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath has called on the government to engage positively with the Cork County GAA Board to ensure the promise of a €30m grant towards the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh is honoured.
Deputy McGrath stated, “The redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh is one of the most exciting projects in Cork for a long time. The Cork County Board has put an enormous amount of work into this project and it is worthy of government support. If the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has concerns about aspects of the project, these need to be worked through with the County Board.
“The promise of €30m in funding for this project was made a week before last May’s local elections and the people of Cork will, I believe, be very unforgiving if there is any suggestion it is not being fully honoured. I understand the County Board has been working closely with the Department on the details of the plan and the draw down of any public money is not needed for some time. I would therefore have to question the reason why information about this ongoing engagement was selectively leaked in this way at this time.
“The government and the County Board need to work together in a spirit of partnership to address any outstanding issues the Department may have about the grant. This project is absolutely vital for the region and I look forward to seeing its completion in the years ahead.”
