Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has raised concerns about lengthy delays for people applying for the Invalidity Pension.  The Department of Employment & Social Protection has confirmed that the average waiting time for approval is ten weeks.

Deputy Smyth said, “These figures reveal that people are waiting in excess of two months for their applications to be processed by the Department of Employment & Social Protection, which appears to be struggling with the volume of applications being submitted.

“While I appreciate that there has been an increase in applications since the payment was extended to include self-employed people, it is completely unacceptable that the Minister failed to allocate additional staff to this area to deal with the expected upsurge in demand.

“As a result of Minister Doherty’s lack of foresight, men and women across Cavan and Monaghan are now waiting weeks on end for their applications to be processed.  This is deeply unfair and is leaving families under severe financial pressure.

“The Minister needs to put in place the necessary resources to ensure these applications are processed in a timely manner,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
